Birthmarks are colored skin spots that either are present during birth or grow shortly after birth. Birthmarks can be of many different colors, including brown, tan, black, pale blue, pink, white, red, or purple. Some birthmarks are just colorations of the outside of the skin; others are raised above the surface of the skin or reach out into the tissues under the skin.
Types of Pigmented Birthmarks
Mongolian spots
These type of spots usually are bluish and look like bruises. They often appear on the buttocks and/or lower back, but they sometimes also appear on the trunk or arms.
Pigmented nevi (moles)
These are growths on the skin that usually are flesh-colored, brown or black. Moles can show up anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. Moles occur when cells in the skin develop in a cluster instead of being spread all through the skin.
Congenital nevi
These are the moles that are present during birth. These birthmarks have a marginally increased risk of becoming skin cancer, contingent upon their size.
Cafe-au-lait spots
These are light tan or light brown colored spots that are usually oval in shape. They normally appear at birth yet may develop in the first few years of a child’s life.
The Treatment
The treatment varies based on the kind of birthmark and its related conditions. Q-switched Nd: YAG laser gives a new paradigm for the treatment of birthmarks. This is a viable method for treating epidermal (superficial) and dermal (deep) pigmentation and works by transmitting a wavelength of high energy light, which when concentrated on a specific skin condition will make heat and finish diseased cells.
